Meet Your Teacher: Amy

Here at Your Yoga we see you as part of the family, so we're giving you chance to meet our teachers and get an insight into who they are and why they love yoga! Meet the lovely Amy Coop...

1. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TEACHING YOGA FOR?

It will be 2 years this summer.

2. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A YOGA TEACHER?

I serve where my heart swells. I’ve had a love affair with my own practice for the last 12 years and now I’m committed to creating a space for people to ignite their passions through yoga. I’m a goal digger and dream catcher, passionate about guiding my students to get out of their own way through dynamic movement, power of breath and meditation. Yoga brings me back to my centre so that I can vibrate at the highest frequency possible! My mission is to share what lights me up from the inside.

3. WHERE DID YOU COMPLETE YOUR TRAINING?

Beautiful Bali, Indonesia – an island so full of spirit and magic!

4. WHAT QUALIFICATIONS HAVE YOU RECEIVED FROM YOUR TRAINING?

I completed my 200-Hour Yoga Alliance and Blissology certified training with Eoin Finn. I am also qualified to teach yoga in prisons following my certification with the Prison Yoga Project and work with the Prison Phoenix Trust.

5. WHAT IS IT YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT TEACHING YOGA?

For me, play equals freedom. I love raising the roof with our positive, playful vibrations and collective energy! I enjoy helping my students go further than they think they can, but nothing lifts me up more than the quiet rumble of happy hearts beating together in Savasana after a strong yet soothing practice. My mantra: Sweat. Smile. Sparkle. Repeat!

6. WHAT IS YOUR TOP TIP FOR PEOPLE THINKING ABOUT STARTING TO PRACTISE YOGA?

Don’t take it too seriously – it’s only yoga. Find a local studio with a good vibe (like Your Yoga!) and roll out your mat. Take some time to find a style and teacher that’s right for you and practise whatever feels good in your own body. Approach your practice with a little bit of humour and a lot of play!

7. DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE POSTURE?

Pincha Mayurasana (Forearm Balance). I love the feeling of being suspended, like I’m floating in mid-air. This was once my biggest challenge pose and shows me just how much strength and potential I actually have. I’m still challenged every single day when I come to my mat and I relish these moments of lightness when the alignment of a pose finally comes together. This is big magic!

8. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR OTHER INTERESTS OUTSIDE OF YOGA?

Travelling, writing, live music, food and shopping for mala beads <3

9. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY THE BIGGEST BENEFIT OF PRACTISING YOGA IS?

For me, it’s the recalibration of our minds and our hearts. The mind doesn’t speak the language of the body but the breath does, and it is through our yoga practice that the two have a really deep conversation and everything falls into sync. This intrinsic balance is what I call bliss. It’s from this place of stillness that we connect back to our inner strength, happiness and truth so that we have the tools to follow our true North.

10. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE COMING TO ONE OF YOUR CLASSES FOR THE FIRST TIME?

Do what makes you feel good and have fun! Don’t worry about getting everything right the first time. That’s why it’s called a yoga practice, not a yoga perfect!
